This year, I’ve explored new-to-me authors writing in a multitude of genres and styles. Many of these discoveries came to me as a reviewer for Partners in Crime Tours–a “one-stop for all things mystery, crime, thriller or cozy!” One of these discoveries is the work of award-winning indie author Gledé Browne Kabongo, who writes psychological thrillers.
Her latest delves deep into the realm of the global pharmaceutical industry, breakthrough scientific research, and a family dynasty built on a foundation of power, conspiracies, and secrets that, if exposed, threatens the family’s very existence. If you’re intrigued by mysteries and medical thrillers, this might be a good addition to your bookshelf!

Synopsis:Drowning in grief and desperate for work, brilliant cancer researcher Sabree Warner leaps at the chance to join Montague Pharma, one of the world’s most powerful pharmaceutical dynasties. Her first assignment seems straightforward: investigate why promising drug compounds were mysteriously abandoned before they could be developed into life-saving medicines. But someone doesn’t want her digging. A car nearly runs her down on a quiet street and speeds away, and her apartment is vandalized. Undeterred, Sabree probes further and uncovers a twisted game of corporate espionage. The abandoned drugs weren’t shelved by accident—they were buried to hide a secret that could destroy the Montague empire. Then Sabree discovers her connection to the powerful Montague family runs deeper—and deadlier—than she could ever imagine. As a vicious succession battle rages, someone has been watching her every move, someone who has already killed to keep the truth about her identity buried. In this world of ambition and ruthless power games, Sabree is fighting for more than answers. She’s fighting to stay alive.
Because in the Montague family, secrets don’t stay hidden, they get eliminated.
***
Unlike most of the thrillers I’ve read, this one seemed to have a more measured pace through much of the first third of the storyline. After shocking physical action in the prologue, the speed and rhythm of the storyline slows, with attention shifting to introduce the characters and the corporate environment within Montague Pharma.
The protocols, research designs, and methodologies are described in depth using the language of the academic and scientific communities. Readers unfamiliar with such language might be tempted to ignore the blocks of technical-laden narrative and skip ahead to dialogue and action scenes. In doing so, however, they’re likely to miss contextual clues that help frame the story; the seemingly slower pace of the action at key points allows the reader time to absorb the puzzle-solving details.
The author’s descriptions of Boston, Martha’s Vineyard, and high-tech labs shapes the landscape as the story unfolds and the action accelerates. Short chapters and a series of confrontations create a sense of urgency for the protagonist, Sabree, who was hired by the CEO to apply her analytical skills to delve into the archives and find out why promising research projects were shelved without explanation.
In doing so, Sabree finds herself in harm’s way when shadowy figures set plans in motion to discredit the young scientist while protecting themselves and secrets long buried. To save herself, Sabree must unravel the twisted links between hidden truths, family infighting, and corporate sabotage. Can she discover the truth before it’s too late?
