Winter Fun & Safety

January in the Ozarks brought an arctic blast and high winds howling through the hills, plunging temperatures toward zero with wind chills that can only be described as brutal. A treacherous layer of ice covered in snow convinced me to curtail Sasha’s outdoor exercise time.

For those who do venture out, it’s worth reviewing the AKC staff’s list of winter safety tips to help you keep your dog warm and safe. One of those tips: avoid thin ice. I’d go further: keep your dog on a leash and away from ice-covered ponds, rivers, and lakes. Just a few days ago, a duck-chasing German Shepherd fell through the ice 75 yards from the shore at Lake Fayetteville and had to be rescued by crew members from Ladder 4 and Battalion 2 of the Fayetteville AR fire department. (Watch a clip of the successful rescue here.) Moral of the story: don’t risk the well-being of your dogs or the safety of rescue personnel!

On a lighter note, there are myriad ways to keep your dog engaged and happy, even if you can’t go outside. Teach a skill, tease their brains, and find ways to have fun wherever you are. (Find ideas here.) If you prefer video to print, search online for fun and easy activities you’ll both enjoy! For Sasha, scenting games and tricks are among her favorite ways to have fun. Hide and Seek, the Muffin Tin game, and Find it! are her favorites. We’re working our way through the 101 dog tricks found in Kyra Sundance’s Pocket Guide to Dog Tricks. (Sasha has already earned her Novice title and is on her way to Intermediate.)

Don’t let wintry weather spoil the fun for you and your dog. Integrating a variety of games, tricks, and activities can liven up your daily exercise and training sessions, no matter the weather.  With a little creativity you just might discover new opportunities for training and bonding time with your best friend!

  1. Our fire/rescue crews are great!

For me, the cold months are the perfect time with Buddy the Wonder Cat, who has very definite opinions about which book he wants me to read!

    Thanks for coming by,
